General Information on Suicide

Advancing Suicide Prevention is a new and provocative publication in the health policy/social services arena. This bimonthly magazine presents issues, trends and state-of-the-science on suicide prevention from diverse perspectives and for diverse audiences.

American Association of Suicidology (AAS) promotes research, public awareness programs, public education, and training for professionals and volunteers. In addition, AAS serves as a national clearinghouse for information on suicide.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research and education, and to reaching out to people with mood disorders and those affected by suicide.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) includes fact sheets about suicide in various populations (teens, elderly, etc,) as well as warning signs, risk factors and other information and links.
The website also is home to WISQARS (the Web-based Injury Statistics Query Reporting System), an interactive database that provides customized reports of injury-related data, including suicide death rates, up until 2003.

Family Resource Connection is a service offered through the New Hampshire State Library. They maintain a resource library with books, videos, tapes and other media sources on a variety of subjects, including suicide. You can arrange to borrow materials from the library and they will mail them directly to your home. For more information, call 1-800-298-4321.

The National Center for Suicide Prevention Training (NCSPT) provides educational resources to help public officials, service providers, and community-based coalitions develop effective suicide prevention programs and policies.

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the lead federal agency for research on mental and behavioral disorders. Their website includes a variety of fact sheets on suicide across the lifespan, depression, and the state of suicide in the country.

National Mental Health Association (NMHA) addresses all aspects of mental health and mental illness. Their website includes fact sheets and statistics on suicide.

National Organization for People of Color Against Suicide (NOPCAS) addresses and raises awareness about the epidemic of suicide in minority communities.

National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP) lays out a framework for action to prevent suicide and guides development of an array of services and programs that must be developed. It is designed to be a catalyst for social change with the power to transform attitudes, policies, and services.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Gallery is a website which allows individuals to share information related to suicide prevention for the purpose of raising awareness, reducing stigma, and connecting others to support.

National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center provides current information pertaining to youth violence and suicide, and provides fact sheets on a variety of youth risk factors for suicide, like depression, bullying, and substance abuse.

Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) SAVE’s mission is to prevent suicide through public awareness and education, eliminate stigma, and serve as a resource to those touched by suicide.

Suicide Prevention Action Network USA (SPAN USA) is the nation's only suicide prevention organization dedicated to leveraging grassroots support among suicide survivors (those who have lost a loved one to suicide) and others to advance public policies that help prevent suicide.

Suicide Prevention Partnership (SPP) works to reduce suicide and suicidal behavior in the United States by designing and running programs that address systemic issues in suicide prevention, as well as by funding a limited number of suicide prevention projects with grants.

Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) supports suicide prevention by offering the best of science, skills, and practice. This website contains an online library, news updates, articles, online courses in prevention, and links related to suicide prevention and information for survivors of suicide.

Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program is a community-based outreach program that teaches about the internal nature of depression and loneliness. Suicide Prevention Community Development, Gatekeeper Training, seminars, and workshops with fully developed curriculum (and videos) are available.

Youth Suicide Prevention Program (YSPP) YSPP’s mission is to reduce teen suicide attempts and deaths in Washington State. Working toward that goal, they build public awareness, offer training, and support communities taking action.
