Reduce stigmatizing attitudes and increase help-seeking behaviors.
Stigma Reduction
The National Suicide Prevention Stragtegy identifies stigma reduction as a key prevention strategy. Many people with a mental illness or substance abuse disorder do not seek treatment due to stigma. Stigma reduction efforts will include working with the media.
- Connect formed a workgroup to develop key messages with a focus on:
- Increasing help seeking behavior
- Decreasing stigmatizing attitutes - Messages to be incorporated into training materials
- Messages will be tested and evaluated in Connect communities
- Work with media to disseminate messages
- Work with media to promote responsible reporting through CDC media guidelines
