Peer Support Specialist
Independent Contractor Position
NAMI NH is seeking two peer recovery specialists for the NH Dept of Corrections and Dept of Justice, Second Chance Act Grant. These are independent contractor positions to work up to 28 hours per week. The positions are grant funded for one year. Continuation of these positions is based upon funding through Second Chance Act up to 3 years.
Job Summary: Peer Recovery Support Specialists provide non-professional recovery support to re-entering individuals recovering from alcohol and drug problems and co-occurring mental health disorders. The Specialists work to help re-entering individuals connect with natural supports including family, faith-based supports, clean and sober community activities and women’s services. Peer Support Specialists bring 5 years of lived experience in recovery to their position.
Job Responsibilities:
- Participate in the Recovery Coaching Academy Training and apply coaching principles
- Participate in other training aimed at increasing group and individual mentoring skills and completing other job responsibilities
- Participate in regular scheduled supervision with NAMI NH supervisor to focus on peer support boundaries and ethics and program operations
- Work closely with program counselors, linkage specialists and other project staff
- Work with re-entering offenders to develop an individualized recovery plan that connects them to family support and community based recovery resources
- Provide day to day emotional and tangible support including rides, referrals and guidance
- Complete paperwork and documentation in a timely and efficient manner
- Knowledge of community resources including 12 step meetings, mental health peer support, clean and sober recreational activities and organizations, and learning opportunities for recovering people and their families
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:
- 5 years minimum of lived experience in recovery
- Demonstrated ability to maintain ethics and boundaries in peer relationships
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system, prison life and re-entry and parole preferred
- Ability to work effectively within a team of counselors, linkage specialists and other project staff
- Familiarity with community resources that support addiction recovery and/or recovery from mental illness
- Unconditional respect for recovering people re-entering communities after a period of incarceration
- Understanding of the impact of trauma and mental health issues on recovering individuals
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
- Good time management skills, self directed and self motivated
- Demonstrated basic computer skills
- Transportation and auto insurance coverage required
- Flexibility to work some weekends and evenings
