New Hampshire State Summitt

"Children and Adolescents: Shared Responsibility - Shared Benefits"

October 18-19, 2002

After almost a year of planning, the New Hampshire Department of Education (NH DOE) in collaboration with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill New Hampshire (NAMI NH), Community Alliance Reform Effort - New Hampshire (CARE-NH), the New Hampshire State Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Disabilities Rights Center (DRC), the Autism Society of New Hampshire (ASNH), the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire (IOD) and the Parent Information Center (PIC) held a state summit on Shared Implementation of IDEA entitled "Children and Adolescents: Shared Responsibilities, Shared Benefits: Supporting the Emotional Well-being of all Students and Meeting the Unique Needs of Students with Disabilities."

The purpose of the state summit was to bring together partnership teams made up of school and community professionals, parents, mental health providers, and other key stakeholders to learn how to create healthy school climates that support the emotional well being of all students and meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. The conference provided helpful information and strategies for parents and family members, regular and special education teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, school psychologists, education specialists, other school personnel, after school care programs, law enforcement personnel, mental health providers, self-advocates, advocacy groups, regional organizations, and interested individuals. Partnership Teams worked to develop action plans that will increase each local school community's capacity to adopt and sustain effective school climate programs.

We hope teams will take a lead in educating their community about Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports and encourage interested community members to join the effort to support the emotional well being of all children and create a healthy school climate in which students can maximize their potential as learners.

We look forward to our continued collaboration efforts with the NH Department of Education and the partners involved in planning this Summit.
