NAMI NH Releases Revised Guidebook on Mental Health and Healthy Aging
The National Alliance on Mental Illness, NH Chapter (NAMI NH) has released a revised version of “A NH Guide to Mental Health and Healthy Aging for Older Adults and Caregivers.” This guidebook was written for older adults with mental health concerns and/or mental illness and for their caregivers and family members.
Living with mental illness can be challenging, and as an individual grows older, additional health issues are often encountered. The intention of this guidebook is to help individuals who are in their later years, and their families, find information and resources that may help ease the difficulties of mental illness and related issues of aging and suggest healthy approaches for consumers and caregivers.
The guidebook was first published in 2002, and has been revised to include expanded information on wellness and healthy living, diversity issues, health and mental health integration, suicide prevention and updated information on community, state, and national resources listed in the Appendices.
Providers using this book are encouraged to direct individuals and their families to information that is pertinent to them.
NAMI NH has, under a recent grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, plans to turn selected guidebook chapters into individual educational presentations. These presentations could be used as stand alone or integrated together into a more comprehensive program for family members, caregivers and social service workers interested in learning more about healthy aging and mental illness. Stay tuned for future announcements.
