Support - NH Peer Support Centers
The centers listed below are independent consumer-run corporations that work under contract with the state Division of Behavioral Health. They offer more than a place to watch TV, smoke cigarettes and stay off the street, though they all do operate what used to be called drop-in centers. Programs vary from region to region, depending on the needs and preferences of the members. But they all have a few things in common: social activities and outings; support groups; recovery education and coping skills; leadership opportunities; and a group of people who can truthfully say "I've been there. I know how it feels. I'm getting better and so can you.". Some regions offer transitional housing, crisis respite, computer skills training, trauma recovery groups, and one-on-one community outreach. The best way to drop in on a peer support center for the first time is to call ahead and arrange to meet a staff member. Ask the staff member for a time when things are going on at the center when you can be introduced to some people.
In addition to New Hampshire Peer Support Centers, check out other recovery resources and support groups and NAMI NH's publication Hope and Help.
