This fall, hundreds of thousands of Granite Staters will head to the polls to cast their vote and decide who will lead our state and nation in the coming years. Voting is one of our fundamental rights and is one of the most effective ways individuals can ensure their communities are representative of their values and have the resources they need to thrive. However, for our elections to accurately represent the views of all, everyone must take part. That’s why it’s crucial to not only go cast your vote on Election Day, but also to be prepared and make sure you know how to register and who will be on the ballot ahead of time.

With all the candidates running, especially in local elections, it can be hard to know the platform and positions of each candidate. This results in many voters arriving at the polls without a clear idea of who is running or what they stand for. To build the state and country you truly want to see, it’s crucial to research the candidates in your area and their vision for the future.

Thanks to the size of the New Hampshire legislature, and our unparalleled access to our legislators, anyone can reach out to candidates and ask them what their priorities are. To aid you in this effort, NAMI NH has compiled sample candidate questions for both local and national candidates, directly relating to mental health and suicide prevention. Keep these questions in mind, not just as you talk or listen to candidates, but also as you ask yourself what is most important for you and your neighbors in the coming years.

The power is in your hands – your vote matters! Every elected official— and, in turn, every vote— has the ability to advance policies and make decisions that affect the state of mental health in our communities. With this in mind, your vote is integral to helping us build towards a New Hampshire where everyone impacted by mental illness and suicide has hope, help, and health.

Like mental illness and suicide, NAMI New Hampshire is nonpartisan. We support policies that help people with mental health conditions and their families, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders on shared goals to improve the lives of individuals affected by mental illness and suicide.
